The project intends to support the engagement of the Ceduna Homeland Groups in the planning of an appropriate Fire & Risk Mitigation Strategy detailing information and communication necessary to take action during the 2023/24 and future summer season. This proposal aims to minimise fire risks and hazards on all Ceduna Aboriginal homeland properties including: Dinahline, Yarilena, Warevilla, Munda Munda Watutjuna, Bullinda, Betts Corner, Munda and Wanna Mar and the Ceduna Emu Farm.

Supporting Healthy Country - First Nations Roadside Management

The project aims to facilitate the coming together of processes and assessments used by various agencies to develop a Limestone Coast Roadside Management Strategy, with a focus on the integration of First Nations knowledge and practices. This project will enable Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation to elevate the importance of the estimated 10,600 km of road network and associated 10,000 hectares of roadside vegetation to be valued and managed as one continuous corridor of the Limestone Coast region.

Protection and Preparedness: Mapping Aboriginal Heritage for
disaster risk reduction

This project seeks to address the competing tensions of heritage protection and confidentiality requirements by seeking to develop a mapping tool that balances these needs. It will develop a method to share a form of digital location to inform emergency service personnel that Aboriginal heritage exists in the vicinity of the incident and may be under threat by mitigation actions, while protecting the precise location and nature of the site(s).

In response, a working group recommended a comprehensive geotechnical examination. This project aims to provide vital data to determine the size and scale of the identified risk.

Developing a People at Risk in Emergencies Framework for South Australia 2025-2029

SACOSS and the Australian Red Cross will undertake a review of the People at Risk in Emergencies Framework for South Australia, which was due for review in June 2023. The review process will include a literature review of the national and international evidence base, and consultation with a broad range of stakeholders from across South Australia, including emergency management and health and community services agencies and people with lived experience of risk and or emergencies.

Understanding the Difficulty of Disaster Preparation Tasks: A Pilot Activity

This activity pilots a large-scale survey to map South Australians’ ability to undertake tasks found on disaster preparedness checklists for a range of different disasters. The innovation is that data will be converted into a standardised equal-interval measure to allow comparison across groups, disasters, and regions. This project aims to inform allocation of resources and attention to areas of most need in a multi-disaster future.

Building partnerships for DRR in the Grape Wine Sector

SA’s grape/wine/tourism sector contributes $2.12 billion directly to SA’s economy, accounting for 50% of Australia’s annual grape production. The 2019/20 wildfires in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island revealed a lack of preparedness, and vulnerabilities in wine, grape and tourism businesses. This project will consult with various SA government experts and the sector to identify future opportunities, and develop customised tools for utilisation by the sector.

Resilient Ready

Translating Department for Industry, Innovation and Science small business survey findings into everyday business as usual risk reduction knowledge and behaviours to get ahead of future disasters.

This project is a collaboration between social enterprise Resilient Ready the Department for Industry, Innovation and Science and Council of Small Business Organisations Australia. It will deliver a “Business Community Resilience Toolkit” program across two high risk regions in South Australia. In addition, the project will complete a strategic program of surveys and on/offline workshops presenting micro-learning scenarios to small business owners across metro, regional and rural locations to test risk reduction methodologies and incentives that translate government policy into business-as-usual behaviours with a core focus on business-related insurance issues and solutions.

Children and Young People in Emergency Service Organisations Project

Engagement and inclusion of young people as volunteers can raise awareness of disasters and their consequences and build community resilience. The Country Fire Service Cadet Program was last reviewed in 2010, and is not well known to the communities of SA. This project will collaborate with agencies, such as State Emergency Service. Australian Red Cross and Army Cadets to co-design a program with current cadets and volunteers to modernise the approach and ensure young people are engaged, valued, trained, and wanting to transition to adult volunteers.

Sea flood mapping and impact assessment for Port Adelaide and surrounds

Port Adelaide is the location of defence, energy and freight assets of national and state significance with over $1 billion worth of infrastructure in the area and is experiencing substantial growth. The project will update the flood and risk modelling across the Port Adelaide area for a 1% Annual Exceedance Probability storm event with a range of sea level rise scenarios. Outputs will be available through the interactive Coastal Flood Mapping Viewer.

This project will look at the feasibility of establishing a not for profit, mutual micro insurance scheme, to cover home, contents and vehicle insurance for people on low incomes. Disaster resilience training for SA community museums

This pilot project is a joint initiative between Artlab Australia and the History Trust of SA aimed at strengthening disaster resilience in small metropolitan and regional museums that are prone to disasters, through providing training and resources to staff and volunteers. Museums contain unique knowledge and heritage that tell the community’s stories and play a vital role in rebuilding organisational and community resilience after disasters. The practical training will focus on the prevention and preparation disaster risk reduction stages, while also covering response and recovery stages.

The purpose of BRIMS online is to provide the Bushfire Management Committee and the State Bushfire Coordination Committee member agencies, and the committees, with a web-based data platform capturing the full cycle of bushfire risk management, informing decision making and for the first time recording the status of and reporting upon bushfire risk treatment activities undertaken across the State.

Resilient Asset Management Project (RAMP) incorporating Climate Risk into Asset Management (Phase 3)

The RAMP is piloting the integration of climate risk into local government asset management systems, including spatially mapping climate risk, understanding their impacts on selected asset classes (roads, bridges, stormwater, major buildings, coastal and open space assets) and identifying opportunities for councils to fund any resourcing shortfall to maintain community assets and service standards. The RAMP has been designed to identify the economic and social opportunities from investing in proactive adaptation and disaster resilience initiatives and allow pilot approaches to be transferred to other local governments.
